Deliciously Decluttering Your Life

The closets, the kitchen cabinets, the office desk drawers, the mind, the body, the soul. All of it deserves a spring cleaning /  decluttering session. I haven't yet seen the popular Netflix docu-series “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” on how to declutter and tidy up your home, but what I HAVE seen is people's overnight obsession with the KonMari method of sparking joy. If you haven't heard it being discussed at the various water coolers all over the US, here's the one-liner that explains it all.  'If it doesn't spark joy in your life, get rid of it.' While the KonMari method might feel like a fad, let's apply its underlying philosophy to the various areas of your life that could benefit from some spring cleaning.

Friends

We cannot avoid having acquaintances and colleagues. If you are a breathing, speaking human, you're going to have acquaintances and colleagues. But what you can choose to have are friends. So as you look down your friend list, give thought to which individuals spark joy for you. If you find there are people on that list who are a drag, consider re-evaluating that friendship for the sake of your well-being. This may be one of the hardest things to complete on this list, but it'll be worth it if you're often brushing shoulders with friends who drain you.

Business/Work

We need to keep the outlets in our homes buzzing with electricity and maintain a supply of laundry detergent / soap to avoid B.O. Without sources of income we are destined for a path that's less than ideal. However, working a job that makes you hate waking up to the sun is also less than ideal. If you find yourself weighted by your line of work, consider stepping into new territory. I recommend beginning by imagining your perfect weekday and taking small steps to bring your fantasy to reality.

Spirituality

"Happy are those conscious of their spiritual need..." (Matt. 5:3) As we move into the warmer season, increase your happy by taking stock of your spiritual routine and noting where you can improve. Identify one and only one of those items and integrate it into your routine this month. Spending time with God and / or giving to others leaves you feeling rejuvenated and calm. If that doesn't add little luminous sparks of joy to your life, I'll do all of your chores for a month. 🙂

Here are some quick but powerful spring cleaning tips to help spark joy:

  • End perfectionism. - Seeking perfectionism is like drinking poison. It can sap you of every ounce of joy in your body. Sometimes, good enough is just that. Good enough.

  • Let go of limiting beliefs. - Don't box yourself in with doubts on your abilities. Instead, be inspired by Nike's slogan and "just do it".

  • Give yourself grace. - Let go of the past and leave it there. Wash your hands of the mistakes, wash the stained tears from your beautiful face and progress forward. Nothing happens overnight so plant the seed today and nurture it over the course of the spring.

Congratulations on making it to the season of warm weather. While you declutter the physical items in your life during your spring cleaning routine, don't forget to do a little reconnaissance for the physical YOU and find ways to KonMari the pieces within. Your mind, body and soul will thank you.
